Dr. Nigam’s Blog on The horses in Rigveda

Most Indians brainwashed by the incorrect writings and utterly wrong translations of Rigveda by the westerners, believe that the horse was introduced in India by the Aryans. Here I state what is written about the horses in Rigveda.

Rishi Dirghatma in 163.1 writes about the horse;

When did you for first time neigh proceeding from the sea-water ? With the limbs of wild animals and eagle pinions your birth is noble.” *

Here the rishi is mentioning the evolution of the horse based on the work of Vishnu. From the Evolution theory, we know that the evolution of a horse follows the stages - flying animals developing from the sea water and further evolving into big birds. Seven such big birds happened to be in the regions of the earth which did not pose any danger to their life and these birds stopped using their wings and started running. In time the claws changed to hoofs and the body developed the aerodynamic form suitable for fast running.

On the earth only seven such horses developed. One name for the horse in Rigveda is therefore Sapti i.e. one of the seven.

The devas had made advancements in all fields of science. They had developed art of breeding horses and accordingly they had developed horses as follows:

For carrying heavy loads, slow going horse: Atya

For pulling a cart: Haya

For pulling a car or chariot: Hari

For riding: Arvan

For the use in war a new breed of Hari was developed Vaji Hari (the war horse) later called only “Vaji” .

When Indra was brought, the devas decided to develop a new breed of war-horse superior to “Vaji” ,breeding with the Arvan horse of Indra. Indra was given the job of breeding the war horses for the army apart from training the Indian soldiers[1]. This horse was given the name “Hari Ashva” later called only “Ashva”.
